ABB Inc. is an international developer and producer of power drives, control systems and power converters for the manufacturing sector. At the New Berlin facility, which performs assembly, wiring and electrical testing of motor drives, motors, generators and switchgears, ABB has made facility improvements in energy use, recycling and storm-water monitoring. The company has also tapped employees' expertise to improve the energy efficiency of ABB's products which creates electricity savings for customers.

Environmental activities

The ISO 14001 certified facility in New Berlin relies on employees to lead the way to environmental improvements. Their sector specialist team identifies ways to improve energy efficiency throughout the lifetime of their products, while their continual environmental improvement program provides incentives to employees to share their ideas to improve performance. Environmental achievements at ABB New Berlin include:

• formation of "The Green Team" which has the stated mission "To preserve and protect what matters most by conserving resources through our products, processes, and people." The team dedicates their time and efforts to habitat conservation, waste reduction, energy conservation, and carbon-footprint reduction; and
• upgrading lighting fixtures in the factory and main office, switching from metal halide lights to more efficient fluorescent lights with an expected energy reduction of at least 25%, reducing its carbon dioxide emissions by 193 tons annually. Annual energy bills are expected to be at least $35,000 lower. With rebates, this project should pay for itself in just two years
