Audits and Approved Auditors

Approved Green Tier/EMS auditors

Green Tier participants are required to have their environmental management system audited at regular intervals. The frequency of audits that must be completed by a Green Tier Approved Auditor is determined by your participation level. This webpage is intended to provide participants with the list of approved auditors and more details about the audit frequency and experience. If you are interested in becoming a Green Tier Approved Auditor or would like your current auditor to be listed, please follow the steps listed on our auditors webpage.

We are working hard to ensure that your auditors are a strong resource for you! Green Tier Approved Auditors have demonstrated that they meet the requirements of an outside environmental auditor as defined in Green Tier law. The auditors listed below are able to conduct Green Tier audits for Tier 1 and Tier 2 participants. Click on each name for a short biography and contact information to schedule your next audit!

Mr. Zimmermann routinely assists clients with the assessment, development, and implementation of management systems; and implanting changes that will more effectively manage risk, reduce cost, and/or improve culture. He draws upon over 30 years of experience managing, leading and advising clients on environmental, health and safety programs and systems at the corporate and plant levels; and has worked with organizations ranging in size from Fortune 100 companies to organizations having a single facility. Mr. Zimmermann has personally completed over 250 regulatory compliance and/or management systems audits of facilities throughout the U.S. and internationally, has directed and managed numerous audit programs, and is skilled as both an environmental and safety auditor.

Environmental management system (EMS) audits are key to verify continual improvement activities. They provide a periodic check of the system to ensure it is effective and verify that the system is yielding intended results, while also assessing opportunities for improvement.

EMS audits should be conducted at regular intervals to ensure that the system is functioning effectively. Green Tier requires regular internal and external audits of all environmental management systems, and there are different auditing frequencies for Tier 1 and Tier 2 participants.

The table below shows the minimum frequency for Green Tier audits compared to the ISO 14001:2015 standard. Participants are encouraged to assess their systems more frequently for better results.

Auditor image

Green Tier approved auditors have documented a robust history of evaluating environmental management systems (EMS). They have completed the Green Tier training program to maximize the value of their audit process. Green Tier audits are intended to be a collaborative process to help participants find ways to use effective leadership and management strategies to achieve their continual improvement goals.

A typical audit includes a desktop research component and a site visit to examine the functionality of the EMS. Leadership and employees may be interviewed, processes may be observed, documents may be examined, and the information will be cross referenced with the requirements of the organization's individual EMS. The auditor will then assess whether the EMS is functional and meeting the intent of the Green Tier program.

Auditors may issue non-conformances to highlight areas where the EMS is not in alignment with current practices. Non-conformances are not necessarily a bad thing; they are helpful to understand how the EMS can be better implemented to achieve the desired results. The organization is typically given time to review and correct any non-conformances and provide evidence that the non-conformance will be prevented in the future. Auditors may also note opportunities for improvement in areas where the EMS could be improved for the organization's benefit.

The Green Tier program encourages participants and auditors to view their EMS audit as a performance assessment rather than a fault-finding process. Participants and auditors should work collaboratively to improve the EMS so that the environmental and economic benefits can be simultaneously leveraged. Check out this webinar for more information on how you can use Green Tier to shift the paradigm of both internal and external audits to performance assessments.
