Kettle Moraine State Forest – Lapham Peak Unit

The Hausmann Nature Center, an architectural masterpiece, was the original 8700-square-foot home of Bernice and Dr. Paul Hausmann. The Hausmanns donated their home to the state of Wisconsin, as it was their wish to convert it into a nature center that would promote environmental education. The nature center is open two to three weekends per month from April-October and is accessible. With its location near the top of Lapham Peak and abundant windows, visitors can take in spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding area. 

Things to Do

Arrowheads are displayed under an interpretive sign that describes the history of indigenous people in the area.
  • Check out the displays that illustrate native plants and animals, the geologic history of Lapham Peak and several Indigenous artifacts found on the property.
  • Look out the large windows at the surrounding landscape and try your hand at birding with binoculars available at the nature center. 
  • Take a walk on the nearby accessible Pine Grove Path, and be sure to check out the Butterfly Garden. 
  • Browse the gift shop and find some park-related merchandise to take home. 
  • Visit during one of our educational programs or events, managed by the Friends of Lapham Peak. Visit their website to find current events.
  • The Friends of Lapham Peak are always looking for volunteers to help staff the Nature Center. If interested, please call the forest office at 262-646-3025.

Educational Programming

A variety of educational programs on topics such as live raptors, glaciation/land formations, pollinators, edible plants and much more, are offered throughout the open season. The Friends of Lapham Peak manage events and programming, visit their website to find upcoming programs.

Friends of Lapham Peak

The Friends of Lapham Peak's mission is to promote, support and continue activities at Lapham Peak. The Friends' develop and promote programs, volunteer and fundraise for the park. Learn more about the Friends group and how to join on their website.

Open 2-3 weekends per month from April – October. Call Lapham Peak office at 262-646-3025 or check Friends of Lapham Peak website for updated schedule. The rest of the year the nature center is closed.
