Nestled among the towering pines of the Northern Highland–American Legion State Forest, the Crystal Lake Nature Center offers visitors an opportunity to discover the wildlife, forests and lakes that make Wisconsin’s Northwoods unique. Explore engaging exhibits featuring mounted mammals and birds, aquatic life displays and hands-on natural history collections that showcase the region’s diverse ecosystems. Throughout the summer, the Nature Center hosts weekly Saturday interpretive programs and special events that encourage visitors of all ages to connect with the natural world. Whether you’re camping, hiking, paddling or spending the day at Crystal Lake, the Nature Center is a great place to learn more about the Northwoods before heading out to explore.

Things To Do 

Children stand and listen as other kids give a presentation in the nature center.
  • Get a close-up view of a wide variety of mounted mammals and birds. 
  • Discover something new about the natural history of our local wildlife and their importance in the environment.
  • Kids can have fun exploring a microscope station, mammal fur displays and educational games and books. 
  • Participate in weekly Saturday interpretive programs throughout the summer season.
  • Events like Smokey Bear’s Birthday Celebration in August are held annually, view the DNR Events Calendar to find upcoming events.

  • The Nature Center is closed. 
     

School or Organization Programs

Private school field trips and group programs are not currently offered. Visitors are encouraged to attend public interpretive programs during the summer season.
