Trail Projects

Peninsula State Park

As part of the continuing implementation of the 2018 master plan, Peninsula State Park will work to improve the trail system to improve trail sustainability and visitor experience.

The master plan authorizes changes to the trail system, including adding sustainable, purpose-built mountain bike trails. The mountain bike trails will follow current design standards, including creating 18-48-inch-wide trails that meander through the property, utilizing desirable topography to provide an enjoyable user experience, and minimizing soil displacement while avoiding ecologically sensitive areas.

Other trail improvements at Peninsula State Park authorized under the current master plan include the construction of accessible trails and the removal of unsustainable trails within wetlands.

Mountain Bike Trail Project Timeline (subject to change)

May-August 2024: DNR completes compliance work, including environmental reviews, field surveys, species (ecological) reviews, and archaeological and historic reviews for Phase 1. Plans, including construction timeline and trail centerline location, will be modified based on the results of these reviews, species guidance, and other factors to ensure compliance and use of best practices—complete fundraising for construction of Phase 1 by external partners, including Friends of Peninsula State Park.

Fall 2024 or 2025: Begin construction of trails pending reviews and acquisition of permits, consistent with species guidance and avoidance dates.

2025-2026: Open Phase 1 trails.

2025-2028: Phase 2 construction pending reviews and fundraising by partners.

2028: Open Phase 2 trails and completed work currently identified (see maps).
