Picnic Areas and Shelters

Merrick State Park

There are picnic areas along the Mississippi River offering tables, water, access to fishing opportunities, wildlife viewing and a chance to just relax. One picnic area near the lower boat launch is open to leashed pets.

The park playground is midway between the north and south campgrounds adjacent to the nature center shelter parking lot. The playground offers children a safe play environment including opportunities to climb, swing and explore.

Picnic shelters

Round Shelter: The round shelter was built in the mid-1930s. It is adjacent to a large picnic area affording shade and open areas. Though small, the shelter offers a surrounding picnic area which is equipped with picnic tables, water and grills to accommodate a large group. Adjacent parking and toilets are available.

Nature Center Shelter: The nature center shelter can accommodate about 60 people and the adjacent picnic area can accommodate many more. The shelter shares space with a small nature center which includes exhibits addressing the natural assets of the park. Parking and toilet facilities are nearby. A playground is near this shelter. The shelter is lighted and offers electrical outlets. Picnic grills and tables are also included.
