Lizard Mound State Park

The Lizard Mound property is an Indigenous burial ground and cultural landscape, featuring one of the largest and most well-preserved effigy mound groups in the area. As a burial ground, the area is considered sacred by present-day Wisconsin tribal nations. During your visit, please show respect for the site and the individuals interred here. The property is protected under the provisions of state law (Wis. Stats. s. 157.70). All unauthorized ground disturbance is prohibited. Visitors must follow all other recreation rules and regulations

Preserve the Soundscape - Be mindful of audio disturbances and do not interfere with the contemplative setting of the site. Speak quietly and use headphones. Motor vehicles and buses, when parked on site, must stop their engines.

Enjoy the Space Appropriately - Practice respectful behavior. Activities such as running, climbing, bicycling, playing sports and unleashed pets are not allowed.

Respect the Property - Stay on designated trails. Do not walk on, over, or otherwise disturb the mounds. They are historic features of this cultural landscape.

Hiking

More than a mile of limestone and grass-surfaced trails loop throughout the property. A self-guided tour winds around 28 well-preserved burial mounds. Please remember to remain on designated trails as walking on the mounds is strictly prohibited.

Interpretive Center

There is an interactive interpretive center featuring cultural and historical information regarding the archeological aspects of the property.

Picnicking

A picnic area with tables is located near the interpretive center. A drinking fountain and an accessible picnic table is located south of the parking lot.
