DNR Seeking Public Comment On Master Plan Variance To Provide Snowmobile Parking Along Military Ridge State Trail

Submit Comments Through Jan. 29

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking public comment on a master plan variance that would add access to alternative snowmobile parking facilities connecting to the Military Ridge State Trail around the Verona area in Dane County.

As described in Chapter NR 44 of the Wisconsin Administrative Code, a master plan variance is a change in the use or management of an area that is consistent with the area’s land management classification and objectives.

The variance to the Military Ridge State Trail in the Southwest Savanna Regional Master Plan proposes providing alternate parking access to snowmobiles at a location that would allow connection to the Military Ridge State Trail and other local club snowmobile trails. This variance would not require passing through or around the city of Verona.

The 40-mile Military Ridge State Trail in Iowa and Dane counties connects Dodgeville and Madison by way of an 1855 military route between Verona and Dodgeville. Summer trail use is primarily walking and bicycling, with winter uses including cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The trail is also groomed and open for snowmobiles between Dodgeville and Verona.

The public can review the draft variance by visiting the DNR’s Southwest Savanna Regional Master Plan webpage.

Please submit questions or comments on the proposed variance by Jan. 29, 2024 to:
