Public shooting ranges in Wisconsin

Promoting hunting, shooting sports and hunter safety is a long-standing objective within the Department of Natural Resources. Providing the public with accessible, environmentally friendly and safe public shooting ranges to shoot and sight-in rifles and handguns is one element of this objective. The ability to build new modern shooting ranges and improve existing ranges is based on available funding through the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act, better known as the Pittman-Robertson or P-R Act, which places an excise tax on the sales of firearms, archery equipment and ammunition.

Using Pittman-Robertson funds for shooting range improvements and development is giving back to those who pay into the system and also impacts future P-R funding.
