Surface Water Data Viewer

The Surface Water Data Viewer (SWDV) is a DNR data delivery system that provides interactive web mapping tools for a wide variety of datasets including chemistry (water, sediment), physical and biological (macroinvertebrate, fish) data.

This interactive web mapping application for surface water resources is an HTML5 web application that will work in all current browsers. The interface has tabs that group similar sets of tools (similar to MS Word or Excel). Other features include drawing tools, the ability to add a Shapefile or tabular dataset with latitude/longitude coordinates, as well as the ability to change coordinate systems.

Recent Updates

An enhancement update of SWDV was released 5/18/2026. Changes included:

  • Removal of floodplain layers, a theme and a search tool;
  • Expansion of the Layer Catalog;
  • Symbology in the layer list.

The removed floodplain layers and search tool are available in the Storm Water Waterway and Wetland Permit (SW4P) Viewer

These updates are the second of two large changes undertaken between July 2025 and May 2026 as part of an enhancement project. To view past updates, refer to the Surface Water Data Viewer Release Notes.

Themes

The SWDV has eight topical themes, listed in the table below, and two functional themes. The functional themes are titled “Default” and “All Off.” The eight topical themes turn on preselect data layers while the functional themes revert to the default or clear the map.
