Welcome to Newport State Park’s Nature Center, where the past, present and future are written in the stars! Exciting new interpretive and hands-on displays showcase the geologic riches of Door County and the fascinating natural and cultural history of the area that is now Newport State Park. View animal displays, learn about the night sky and how Newport State Park was designated an International Dark Sky Park, the first and only one in the state of Wisconsin.

Things To Do

  • See examples of the many birds and animals that can be found in the area.
  • Try your hand at the wildlife scat, track and fur match-up table, check out the bird-watching area and other fun crafts and activities available for kids and families.
  • Don’t miss the monarch butterfly nursery and observation station (in season from June to August). You can even check out a Discovery Pen to be used on our accessible Fern Trail interactive self-guided tour.
  • The Nature Center is located in the park office building, but don’t pass up the area outside the building, considered an outdoor extension of the Nature Center. There are songbird and pollinator gardens with many informative interpretive displays. Step up to the bird silhouette, measure how wide your wingspan is and compare it to local birds.
  • Browse the store located within the park office and find a souvenir to take home.

Educational Programming

Nature programs run May through October when the naturalist is on staff. Take a class, a guided hike, watch a program, learn about the stars and view the night sky and even more! Fun events and programs are held for all ages. You can find the schedule of programs on the DNR Events calendar by searching "Newport State Park."

Newport Wilderness Society

You can also find information about the park, volunteer opportunities and programs from Newport Wilderness Society (Friends of Newport State Park), the parks official friends group. This dynamic group helps in numerous ways, from volunteer workdays, helping at events, financially supporting park projects, raising funds through merchandise sales at the park and 100% financial support of the naturalist’s salary. Check out their website at friendsofnewport.org
