Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest

Cross-country skiing

The NHAL has 4 beautifully tracked and wonderfully scenic cross-country ski trails: Escanaba, Madeline, McNaughton and Raven. The red loop of the McNaughton Trail system is groomed for skate skiing, while all other trails/loops are groomed for classic skiing only. A state trail pass is required for on these trails. Because they are groomed/tracked, snowshoes, hiking and pets are not allowed on these trails when snow-covered.

The Lumberjack, Shannon and Powell trails are popular trails for ungroomed skiing.

Snowmobiling

The NHAL has nearly 400 miles of marked snowmobile trails that connect with an extensive network of county and local snowmobile club trails. These trails are all maintained and groomed by the local snowmobile clubs.

Snowshoeing

The parking lots at Lumberjack (Concora Rd. parking lot), Powell, Shannon, Fallison, North Trout and Star Lake Trails are kept plowed to provide excellent snowshoeing opportunities on those trails.

Snowshoeing is also allowed anywhere off trail in the forest and the possibilities are endless. Please remember, snowshoeing is not allowed on the ski trails when they are snow-covered.
