Biking

Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest

Trails designated for mountain biking are the McNaughton, Madeline and Raven trails. These mountain bike trails require a state trail pass

Bikes are not allowed on the the Fallison, Trout Lake, Star Lake or Tom Robert's trails, however, biking is allowed on all other roads and trails within the state forest, which amounts to hundreds of miles of biking opportunities.

There are three trails on or near the forest that have suitable surfaces for all bikes. The Bearskin State Trail has trailheads in Minocqua and on Highway K near State Highway 51. There is a paved trail in the southern part of the forest that connects the Clear Lake Day Use Area to Indian Mounds Campground, which crosses Clear Lake Campground entrance along the way. The surrounding area towns also maintain a paved bike trail that runs from Mercer to St. Germain, passing near Big, Upper Gresham, Jag Group, North Trout, South Trout, Firefly, Crystal, Musky and Plum Lake campgrounds.
