Peshtigo Brook Wildlife Area

Peshtigo Brook Wildlife Area is a 2,373-acre property in Oconto County. This area has extensive sedge meadows interspersed with dry oak, pine and aspen forests.

The property is north of Suring and south of Highway 64. Take Hawthorn Road from Pipeline Road to a parking area on the southwest corner of the property.

Management Objectives

State ownership of the property began in 1953 and the original management was directed toward sharp-tailed grouse. With changes in land cover, management has shifted to forest wildlife. Large marshes within the area support wetland wildlife but the water supply for the area is dependent on rainfall and the marshes are often dry.

Today, timber sales on the area improve habitat for wildlife dependent on early-successional forest types. Prescribed burns to control brush in the sedge meadows are conducted periodically. The road system within the wildlife area is maintained for management activities but is not open to vehicular traffic for much of the year. Some of the sedge meadows and a small stand of hardwoods are designated as state natural areas because of the quality of the habitat.
