DNR Temporarily Closes Parking Area At Krakow Park In Montello

MONTELLO, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has temporarily closed the parking area adjacent to the lock channel at Krakow Park in Montello, Wisconsin. This is an interim action taken until a barrier fence can be installed to restrict parking in the south stalls along the lock channel. Installation of the barrier fence is expected to be completed by the end of the day on June 4, 2026.

On May 29, the department was made aware of a small sinkhole forming near the pedestrian bridge along the exterior lock wall. The sinkhole poses a hazard to pedestrians and pets and has the potential to increase in size. The DNR is monitoring the situation and urges everyone to stay outside of the fenced-off area.

Until further notice, the Montello Dam gates will remain at a stable setting with minimal operation to support safety and structural integrity. Reconstruction of the lock channel wall will begin in July or August 2026. During the construction period, the entire parking area will be closed for public use until construction is completed.

The DNR appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation as we work to ensure public safety and complete necessary infrastructure repairs.
