Learn To Hunt Pheasants

Description

The Grant County Outdoor Sport Alliance will be hosting two Learn to Hunt events in October. The Learn to Hunt Program is a Department of Natural Resources program where novice hunters are introduced to different hunting activities through a classroom and hunt with an experienced mentor.

The events are open to anyone 10 years of age or older who is interested in learning to hunt the species being hunted. This year’s Learn to Hunt Events are for pheasant and squirrel hunting. State hunting license requirements are waived for these events.

The Learn to Hunt Pheasant Hunt will be held on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024, in the Bloomington-Patch Grove area. The classroom session will include information about pheasants and other upland game birds, shotgun shooting, firearm and hunting safety, pheasant hunting techniques and hunting with different types of pointing and flushing bird dogs. After the classroom session, students and mentors will go to an area farm where pheasants provided by the DNR will be released so the students can experience hunting and hopefully harvesting a pheasant or two.

The Learn to Hunt Squirrel Hunt will be held on Oct. 26, 2024, at the Stitzer Sportsmen’s Club. Students will review firearm safety rules, squirrel hunting techniques, squirrel species ID and target shooting. Students will then be paired with an experienced mentor and participate in the actual hunt in the Stitzer area.

Persons interested in participating in any of the above events should contact Chuck Horn at 608-822-5145 or at HornCS18@gmail.com for more information and an application. Please note the registration deadline is Oct. 1, 2024.
