Turkey Hunting 101

Loren Voss will present at the Horicon Education and Visitors Center for a Turkey Hunting 101 class.

Admission to this class is free for the public, and you can register on the Raised At Full Draw website. The session aims to introduce participants to the fundamentals of turkey hunting, including turkey calls and provides a forum for experienced hunters to share their insights on turkey hunting.

Voss' presentations will advise novice hunters on the basics and offer a guide for those interested in hunting turkey. With over four decades of experience, Loren Voss, hailing from Fond du Lac, has successfully attracted gobblers in various locations across the country. While Voss has pursued a range of game, such as deer, moose, caribou and elk, he expresses a unique appreciation for the tranquility of sitting in a field and hearing the distinct, gobbling call of wild turkeys.

The reintroduction of wild turkeys to Wisconsin began in 1976, initially in the southwest part of the state. The turkey population grew and spread, leading to the first hunts in 1983 (spring) and 1989 (fall). Although turkey hunting in Wisconsin has yet to reach the popularity of the gun deer hunt, it has become a familiar and valued activity. Despite annual fluctuations in turkey populations, the number of birds harvested by hunters has remained relatively stable, with an average of over 40,000 birds taken each year, down from the peak of 52,880 birds in 2008.
