Kids’ Ice Fishing Clinics in Milwaukee Area

Description

Bring the kids to one of five Milwaukee County parks for free ice fishing clinics. Clinics will begin every hour starting at 9 a.m., with the last clinic starting at 2 p.m.

These clinics are held on formally designated urban waters. The designation by state statute (s. 29.053 (2) (a), Stats, means they are reserved for participants ages 15 and younger and people with certain disabilities during this time.

Small children must be accompanied by an adult. Local fishing clubs will teach participants how to ice fish and stay safe while enjoying the activity. No registration is required; however, advanced notice please if you plan to bring a group larger than 20.

Details:

• Dress for the weather and attend your choice of clinics held at five park lagoons.

• Free fishing instruction, including safety, knot tying, proper equipment and techniques.

• Taught by local fishing clubs.

• Fishing equipment is available, but please bring your own if possible.

Ice Safety Reminders:

Please share these tips with the participants you bring to this event, or anytime you go on the ice.

• Carry a cell phone, and let people know where you are going and when you’ll return home.

• Wear proper clothing and equipment, including a life jacket or a float coat, to help you stay afloat and to help maintain body heat.

• Wear ice creepers attached to boots to prevent slipping on clear ice.

• If you fall in, remain calm and call for help.

• Rescuers should use a rope or similar to avoid falling through themselves.

• The DNR does not monitor ice. Please check with local fishing clubs and outfitters for local ice conditions.
