Adult Learn to Hunt Deer - Rifle

Description

This multi-session immersive Learn to Hunt event for adults will cover topics related to hunting deer with rifles including:

  • deer biology, habitat, and scouting
  • rifle safety and target practice (no shooting experience needed to participate)
  • rules and regulations
  • butchering & processing deer

Firearms and ammunition will be provided; lodging to be coordinated with volunteer instructors. Each hunter will be paired with an experienced instructor and hunt over a weekend. Hunter Safety is not required to participate in this program.

**We ask that all participants attend at least three of the four sessions.

 

A tentative agenda is below:

Tuesday, Sept. 5, 6–8 p.m.

Location: Fitchburg service center

Topics: Classroom session covering introductions, gear, and rules and regulations

 

Saturday, Sept. 9, 8–11 a.m.

Location: Dane County Law Enforcement Training Center, Waunakee

Topics: Introduction to deer hunting rifles, firearm safety, and target practice.

 

Tuesday, Sept. 12, 6–8 p.m.:

Location: DNR building on Buckley Road, Madison

Topics: Hands-on deer processing with assistance from instructors

 

Sept. 22-24 - Hunt weekend

Tentative agenda:

Friday afternoon - shoot in Leland with Mentors, then hunt, pot luck after dark.

Saturday & Sunday - hunting continues in the Leland area of Sauk County and surrounding areas. Hunting is dependent on hunter & mentor schedules.

Deer harvested early on in the weekend may be home-processed with assistance from the group. Participants who harvest deer later in the weekend may be asked to drop off their deer with a professional processor for a fee.

You will need to have a DNR customer ID number in order to enroll. An email with more detailed information will be sent to participants in September.
