Adornment and Beads

-

Description

This hands-on workshop will integrate the regalia of the Ho-Chunk people with the use of porcupine quills and glass beads. For centuries the Native peoples that have inhabited the area surrounding Tee Wakacak (English translation: Sacred Lake) have displayed their connection to the natural world through the adornment of their everyday utilitarian objects. Participants will create deerskin, bead, and quill friendship bracelets as a token of this shared cultural experience. (Space is limited, so please come early if you would like to participate in making the craft.)

Presenter: Melanie Tallmadge Sainz, Ho-Chunk artist and cultural arts presenter and Director of Little Eagle Arts Foundation (LEAF).

This program was made possible by an Incentive Grant from The Friends of Wisconsin State Parks and funding from The Friends of Devil’s Lake State Park and the Little Eagle Arts Foundation. This program is best for kids 7 and older and adults, but open to kids of all ages.

Meet inside the Nature Center.
