Fun with Maps and Compasses

-

Description

We’ll go over the basics of using a map with a compass so that when you get lost in the wilderness, at least you’ll know what direction you’re lost in! We’ll show you how to use an orienteering compass, and measure the length of your pace. After that, we’ll send you out with a loaner compass and a list of compass coordinates and distances which you will use to locate the waypoints along a pre-set compass course. If you do it right, you will find yourself back at your starting point! Don’t worry, you won’t get lost, or end up in the lake... hopefully...

Equipment suggested: Good walking shoes, water bottle, insect repellent, and if you have one, an orienteering compass (no worries if you don’t). We’ll provide instruction materials and loaner compasses (one per team).

Meet outside the Nature Center.
