Spread Eagle Barrens State Natural Area Guided Hike
Description
Celebrate Wisconsin's Invasive Species Awareness Weekend! Join Roots & Rivers for a guided nature hike at the Spread Eagle Barrens State Natural Area. Lindsay Peterson, executive director of the Roots & Rivers Collaborative and WI Master Naturalist, will guide the hike and discuss the barrens unique ecology and the impacts of invasive species. Hike and explore barrens ecology, broad vistas, interesting plants, and rare barrens birds. Search bracken grassland, jack pine, scrub oak, and quaking aspen for mourning warbler, clay-colored sparrow, Brewer’s blackbird, and other species that require large, open landscapes. See the landscape as it springs to life following recent prescribed burns and learn about the importance of fire on our landscapes.
Trail Info: 2 miles, flat, gravel access roads Please dress appropriately for the weather, bugs, etc.
The event will be held rain or shine! Participants will meet at the Chuckwagon and caravan to sites within the Spread Eagle Barrens, off of Lake Anna Rd. We'll also be giving away free walking sticks at the event! This is a free event. However, an optional donation is greatly appreciated and helps support Roots & Rivers' educational programming throughout our service area. We greatly appreciate your support!
Post-hike lunch (optional): Join us at the Chuckwagon in Spread Eagle for a delicious lunch and for a casual discussion on backyard invasive species and how to incorporate native plants into your own gardens and landscaping.
