Turkey Field to Fork with National Deer Association (Kettle Moraine State Forest)

Description

This Learn to Hunt program is for new adult hunters who want to learn the basics of turkey hunting. Participants will learn about turkey behavior, hunting strategies and firearm safety. Each participant will be paired with an experienced mentor for the program.

Firearms and ammunition will be provided by National Deer Association. 

Cost: $75

Hunter safety not required. 

Agenda: 

  • Instruction: May 23, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. - Union Rod and Gun Club

9 - 11 a.m. - Classroom time to discuss turkey biology, habitat, scouting, hunting techniques and firearm safety. 

11 - 11:30 a.m. - Lunch break  

11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. - Range training, showcase patterning of different turkey ammunition loads and shotgun chokes. Participants will practice with the shotguns they will be using to pursue turkeys. After range training is complete, participants will be free to partner up with their mentor for afternoon scouting and hunting.

  • Hunting: May 24, legal hunting hours - Kettle Moraine State Forest (Northern Unit) 

First light - Mentors and mentees will meet at a predetermined time and location to begin their hunt. Hunting parties can stay out until the end of legal shooting hours.

Interested participants with limited mobility are asked to contact the event organizer about accessibility options in advance of the event.
