Snowmobile crash incident reports

Each year, the Department of Natural Resources maintains a summary of fatal incidents in the Fatality Summaries. In addition, the Annual Program Report contains information on snowmobile registration, safety tips, number of safety students and instructors, number of fatal and non-fatal crashes, and factors involved with fatal crashes. A complete copy of the most recent annual report is available below, and may also be requested by email (please provide a U.S. postal service mailing address).

  • Accident Synopsis
    1. Operator/victim was traveling on groomed trail and struck a power pole off the trail.
    2. Operator/victim rolled the snowmobile near a field / ditch line on private land.
    3. Victim was operating middle snowmobile in group of three. Victim was struck by rear snowmobile in group.
    4. Victim was attempting to cross a state highway and struck by a vehicle. Crash occurred on 1-03-26 and victim died from injuries on 1-17-26.
    5. Victim / operator was last in a group of five snowmobiles.  Victim failed to negotiate a slight curve on a marked trail on the Chippewa Flowage, striking several trees.
    6. Victim / operator was traveling in a group of snowmobiles and hit an ice heave.
    7. Victim / operator was ejected from snowmobile on public trail.
    8. Victim / operator was ejected from snowmobile after jumping the road ditch.
    9. Victim / operator failed to negotiate a curve in the trail resulting in a rollover with life threatening injuries. Crash occurred on 02/07/2026 and died from injuries on 02/09/2026.
    10. Victim / operator failed to negotiate a curve and was ejected from the snowmobile.
    11. Victim / operator was riding with a passenger on the snowmobile. Failed to negotiate a curve and struck a tree.

Annual Reports

Reporting a snowmobile crash incident

A "reportable" snowmobile crash incident is any incident (regardless of the number of snowmobiles involved) that results in a fatality or an injury that requires medical treatment by a physician.

Wisconsin law requires every snowmobile operator involved in a "reportable" incident to report the incident without delay to law enforcement officials. In addition, within 10 days of the incident, the operator must submit a written report on Form 4100-174 [PDF] to the Department of Natural Resources.

Failure to comply with the reporting requirements is punishable by a penalty up to $326.
