Lake sturgeon spawning

Sturgeon Head To Pre-Spawning Locations As Waters Warm

Lake sturgeon usually spawn when the water temperature is about 53 degrees Fahrenheit and sturgeon have been seen moving into their pre-spawning locations on the Wolf River. If you are interested knowing the latest water temperatures on the Wolf River, check out the Wolf River gauge in New London.

As of April 13, sturgeon have been seen in the following areas:

  • Significant pre-spawning activity can be seen at Princeton. Spawning will likely start there within the next couple of days.
  • There are sturgeon porposing at New London and Shiocton with some fish seen cruising at Shiocton. Water temperatures are 52 degrees.
  • No activity has been reported near Shawano, with water temperatures staying at 46 degrees.

There are significant amounts of rain projected for the Wolf River drainage tonight. This could adjust pre-spawning and spawning activity.

If you do head out during the spawn, don’t forget to grab a pair of polarized sunglasses. This will help you see the lake sturgeon in the water.
