Amberg Wildlife Area

Amberg Wildlife Area is a 1,190-acre property located in north-central Marinette County, southwest of the community of Amberg. 

Amberg boasts both globally significant barrens habitat and high-quality wetlands of state significance. The property lies within the Athelstane Barrens Important Bird Area designated by the Wisconsin Bird Conservation Partnership. This area is managed primarily for forest game species and is a great location for a fall hunting trip. Also, there is a Class II Trout stream in the northwest part of the property.

In late spring through late summer, the property is a great place to do bird watching, pick a few blueberries, view the stars and even see the northern lights!

Find Amberg Wildlife Area from Highway 141 in Amberg. Go west on County Highway V approximately 5 miles. A series of two rut roads and firebreaks provide access to the property.
 

Management Objectives

Amberg Wildlife Area is managed to provide opportunities for public hunting, fishing, trapping and other outdoor recreation while protecting the qualities of the unique native communities and associated species found on the property. The property is managed primarily for forest game species and associated habitat types. It is listed in Wisconsin's wildlife action plan as a Conservation Opportunity Area for state significant forested wetland blocks. Management is focused on perpetuating old northern wet-mesic forest grading to a northern dry-mesic forest. Amberg is also listed as a site for managing pine/oak barrens of global significance A portion of the property is managed with prescribed fire, ground layer enhancement and timber management to maintain pine/oak barrens habitat.

*Note: The existing sand roads are open to vehicular traffic.  Driving off-road is prohibited to protect the sensitive habitat.

  • Bathroom - none.
  • Parking lot - There are four mapped parking areas. None are paved, but all have enough space to pull in a vehicle.
  • Campground and size - none.
  • Trails, Types and Lengths - There is a signed snowmobile trail, but no designated hiking or skiing trails.
