Electronic reporting of drinking water samples
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is releasing updated web portals for submitting water sample data in June 2024. See the user guide for instructions and FAQs.
These web portals will continue to be made available to external users (lab staff) via the DNR Switchboard. To access the portals, request the appropriate role for the facility (FID):
- Drinking Water Laboratory Entry Role provides access to the Public Water Sample Submission (DWSLab)
- Private Water Laboratory Data Entry Role provides access to the Private Water Sample Submission (WATR)
Please visit the DNR Switchboard site to request access.
PUBLIC DRINKING WATER SAMPLES
The DNR requires that all Safe Drinking Water Act samples taken after Jan. 1, 2006, are reported electronically to the DNR. This provides the department with a faster, higher quality source of important public health information. Laboratories are responsible for submitting this data directly to the department.
DNR Sampling Forms are available on the laboratory analysis slips page.
The public water web portal provides two options for reporting public water samples:
- Manual entry and correction of sample data
- Uploading multiple samples via data file in one of the approved formats (see lab data transmittal for approved formats)
The status of processed samples can be reviewed in the web portal via the Sample List page for manually entered samples or can be received by email for samples uploaded by file.
All samples entered for a public water system (PWS) can be seen in the Drinking Water System Portal by searching for the system's PWS ID.
Any rejected samples are visible in the main DWS application to the DNR representative for the PWS who will arrange disposition with the sending laboratory.

PRIVATE DRINKING WATER SAMPLES
The DNR requires that all private water sample test results following well construction, pump work or approval requirements be reported electronically to the DNR.
Well drillers and pump installers typically collect the water samples following well construction and pump work and have it analyzed at a certified laboratory. Laboratories are responsible for submitting the results directly to the DNR.
Required lab slips are available under required forms on the information for drillers and pump installers page.
Note: Test results from property transfer well inspection samples are not required to be submitted to the DNR.
The private water web portal provides two options for reporting drinking water samples:
- Manual entry and correction of sample data
- Uploading multiple samples via data file in one of the approved formats (see lab data transmittal for approved formats)
Sample results are reviewed by DNR private water staff.
