Pensaukee Unit
Green Bay West Shores Wildlife Area
History of management
The Pensaukee Unit was established in 1956. Potholes for waterfowl use were developed in the coastal marsh along the shore of Green Bay. Dredge spoil islands off the wildlife area were important breeding areas for Green Bay colonial nesting birds during high water years but recent low water levels have reduced the use of these areas.
Management objective
Today, the native grasses have been managed through the use of prescribed fire to provide nesting cover. Timber sales on the unit have maintained and enhanced habitat for forest wildlife. A recent project to remove dredge spoils from the marsh will create better conditions for fish spawning and for waterfowl.
