An updated standard model floodplain ordinance went into effect in March 2022. This is the model version that should be used by any community amending or repealing and recreating a floodplain ordinance. The state model meets federal and state minimum floodplain zoning standards.

Floodplain Zoning Adoption Process and Model Checklist

A Quick guide to ordinance adoption, October 2025 is available to help describe the process to adopt a floodplain zoning ordinance.

The floodplain ordinance checklist is available to help zoning administrators ensure that their specific ordinance aligns with the DNR model floodplain ordinance. An editable Microsoft Word format is available upon request, please contact the general DNR Floodplain inbox. We ask community zoning administrators to populate this checklist whenever the local community wants to reorder or edit language in the state model. Using the checklist streamlines the review process.
