Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest
Master Plan Variance
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has initiated a master plan variance process for the Northern Highland-American Legion (NHAL) State Forest Master Plan and is seeking public input.
The variance proposes two actions related to improving recreation facilities associated with bicycle touring within the NHAL. The first adds Map H-1 to the 2005 Master Plan, as an addendum to Map H of the 2017 Recreation Amendment, identifying the approximate route of 7 miles (on DNR lands) of authorized bicycle touring trails. The trail is intended to be paved yet may utilize a gravel surface until funding opportunities arise for the final improvements. The second action proposes specific language to be added to the Master Plan for the authorization of a vault toilet facility along an existing bicycle touring trail.
Planned Bicycle Touring Trails and Routes in Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest | Length (miles) |
---|---|
2017 Recreation Amendment Authorized Trails and Routes | 60 |
Trails Completed Since 2017 Recreation Amendment | 24 |
2025 Variance: Planned Trail (on DNR lands) | 7 |
Remaining Authorized Trails and Routes from the 2017 Amendment after 2025 Variance Approval | 29 |
