Lightning Creek Wildlife Area

Lightning Creek Wildlife Area is located just west of Almena in Barron County, WI. The property comprises one DNR fee title-owned and three DNR public easement property parcels. Lightning Creek flows through the property. There are great opportunities to hunt waterfowl and deer found on the property. The Area is a mixture of agriculture, forest, prairie, sedge meadow and shrubs.

Portions of the eased land are still farmed and contain private structures. The public using the property must respect the easement and follow all applicable regulations, including not destroying standing crops and not discharging weapons within 100 yards of a structure.

Management Objectives

The property was acquired to protect and enhance Lightning Creek's shed. It is managed for waterfowl and grassland bird nesting habitat.

The Lightning Creek Wildlife Area offers many recreational opportunities:

  • Hiking (no designated trail)
  • Hunting (noted for deer)
  • Trapping (noted for beaver, muskrats and otter)
