Lyons Wildlife Area
Lyons Wildlife Area is a 135-acre property located 2 miles north of Lake Geneva off Buckby Road in Walworth County. It consists of a mix of upland restored prairie, sedge meadow, and open marshlands with intermixed lowland brush and oak/aspen forest. The White River and Como Creek run along the southern end of the property. Seasonally maintained access lanes provide an intermediate difficulty path around the grasslands and adjacent to the forests and wetlands. Birding opportunities are great on this property and hunting opportunities for deer and small game are plentiful.
Management Objectives
Lyons Wildlife Area is primarily managed to maintain a semi-open habitat in the grasslands and a moderately open understory in the oak forests. Prescribed fire is the main tool utilized every few years, with intermittent brush mowing and herbicide application.
Lyons Wildlife Area is a member property of the Lyons Biodiversity Project in partnership with the Kettle Moraine Land Trust. This initiative joins the public and a coalition of private landowners together to promote grassland conservation in the township. The primary goal is to conserve and benefit declining grassland species, especially migratory birds.
