Kinnickinnic River Fisheries Area – Potton Tract
The Kinnickinnic River Fisheries Area-Potton Tract is a 138-acre property located in southern St. Croix County. It was purchased in 1995 as part of the Kinnickinnic River Fisheries Area. The property consists exclusively of grassland habitat, with the Kinnickinnic River, a world-class trout stream, bisecting it. The property is managed as part of the Western Prairie Habitat Restoration Area, a landscape-scale wetland and grassland restoration project.
The property is located 7 miles northeast of River Falls. Follow Highway 65 north out of River Falls for 3.5 miles, then turn east on County Road J for 1.5 miles. The property is located on the north side of County Road J. Parking lots are available off of County Road J as well as Cemetery Road.
Management Objectives
The property is managed to provide opportunities for public hunting, fishing, trapping, wildlife observation and other nature-based outdoor recreation. Management objectives aim to maintain an open grassland community through prescribed fire, mechanical and chemical control of woody species and limited haying and grazing. Populations of invasive species are controlled or eliminated by cutting, pulling, burning, herbicide treatment and/or biocontrol.
