Matsche Farms Inc CAFO Permit

Matsche Farms is a dairy Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO), located in Shawano County, currently permitted by the DNR under the Wisconsin Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (WPDES) permit program. The operation is owned and operated by Scott Matsche.

WPDES permits are water quality protection permits designed to ensure proper storage and handling of manure from larger-scale livestock operations. The WPDES permit program does not have authority to address odor, noise, traffic or other issues not related to water quality.

On June 3, 2016, DNR received a permit application (see documents below) requesting the DNR reissue Matsche Farm’s WPDES permit to accommodate an expansion to 10,226 animal units by 2019. The nutrient management plan was approved May 10, 2018. Plans and specifications for upgraded feed storage area runoff controls were approved April 3, 2018.

WPDES permit is required

CAFOs like Matsche Farms are required to obtain a WPDES permit. The permit regulates how CAFOs store and land apply manure and process wastewater — e.g. milking center wastes and feed storage leachate — in order to protect water quality.
