    The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) encourages anyone considering hunting for the first time in 2024 to enroll in a hunter education course now before courses begin filling up in spring. Those who complete a hunter education course play a vital role in keeping Wisconsin a safe place to hunt. Many hunting incidents in Wisconsin involve hunters older than 40, decades after learning firearm safety rules in their hunter education courses. It may be time for veteran hunters to refresh these valuable lessons.

    New Baiting And Feeding Bans For Washburn, Barron, Rusk And Sawyer Counties Effective Oct. 5

    The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) was recently notified by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) that a farm-raised deer on a deer farm in Washburn County tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD). This positive result is within 10 miles of the Barron, Rusk and Sawyer county borders, so new baiting and feeding bans will go into effect in Washburn, Barron, Rusk and Sawyer counties on Oct. 5, 2023.

    Special Fire Order Issued Due To Ongoing Drought

    Due to the exceptional and prolonged drought conditions and potential for elevated fire danger, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will reinstate DNR burning permits by issuing a Special Fire Order in 12 southern Wisconsin counties. The permit reinstatement will begin at 12:01 a.m., Monday, Sept. 18, 2023, in designated DNR protection areas until further notice.
